Chloramine T, CAS: 127-65-1

Chloramine T (N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide sodium salt), CAS 127-65-1, is a solid chlorine-releasing disinfectant and oxidising agent. It is used in water treatment, food and beverage plant sanitation, medical and veterinary disinfection, textile and pulp bleaching, and as an oxidising reagent in chemical synthesis. PolyBlueChem supplies it with per-batch COA and SDS.

Specifications

Property Specification
Appearance White crystalline powder
Assay 98 – 103%
Colour (5% solution) 25 Pt-Co max
Turbidity (0.5% solution) 5 FTU max
pH 8.0 – 10.3
Ethanol insolubles 1.5% max
Ortho isomer 0.5% max
Carr index 25% max

The low ortho-isomer limit controls para-isomer purity; the Carr index describes powder flowability, which matters for automatic dosing and tabletting.

Basic Information

CAS number 127-65-1
Chemical name N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide sodium salt (chloramine T)
Formula / MW C7H7ClNNaO2S / 227.64 g/mol (anhydrous)
Form White crystalline powder (often supplied as the trihydrate)
Type Chlorine-releasing (oxidising) disinfectant

Applications

  • Water treatment – disinfection of drinking water, swimming pools and process water.
  • Food and beverage sanitation – CIP and equipment disinfection in dairies, breweries and food plants.
  • Medical and veterinary – instrument and surface disinfection; wound antisepsis history.
  • Bleaching – textile, pulp and starch bleaching.
  • Chemical synthesis – oxidising and chlorinating reagent (for example chloramine formation and iodometric analysis).

Packaging and documentation

  • 25 kg PP/PE bags or drums; keep sealed, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
  • Per-batch certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS).
  • Oxidiser: keep away from acids, ammonia and reducing agents (contact with acid or ammonia releases chlorine/chloramine gas).
