Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, isopropanol, CAS 67-63-0) is supplied here at 99.9% minimum purity with water at 0.10% maximum, a carbonyl value of 0.01% maximum and a sulfide content of 1 mg/kg maximum. That combination is not a standard industrial-grade specification: the low sulfur and low carbonyl limits are what make the material suitable for catalyst-sensitive reactions, electronics cleaning and pharmaceutical use as well as for coatings and general solvent duty.
Specification
| Parameter | Limit | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance / odour | Colourless clear liquid, no odour | Odour is the quickest field indicator of carbonyl or sulfur contamination |
| Purity | Min 99.9% | High-purity grade; the balance is water and trace organic impurities |
| Colour (Hazen) | Max 10 | Very tight colour limit – a requirement in electronics and pharmaceutical use, not a cosmetic one |
| Water content | Max 0.10% | Near-anhydrous grade; IPA forms an azeotrope with water, so this limit is a processing achievement, not a default |
| Acidity (as acetic acid) | Max 0.002% | Free acid corrodes metals and can catalyse esterification or acetal formation |
| Evaporation residue | Max 0.002% | Non-volatile matter – the parameter that matters for cleaning and for electronics, where residue is a defect |
| Carbonyl value | Max 0.01% | Acetone and other carbonyls are the main organic impurity; they interfere with reactions and show up in odour |
| Sulfide content | Max 1 mg/kg | A limit most industrial IPA specifications do not carry at all. Sulfur poisons hydrogenation and polymerisation catalysts at ppm levels and contaminates electronic surfaces |
| Water solubility test | Pass | Confirms the material mixes clear with water – a check on insoluble hydrocarbon contamination |
What the grade is for
| Grade | Typical specification | Constraint it removes |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial | 99.5%, water up to 0.5%, colour and residue limits looser | None – general solvent duty |
| Anhydrous / high purity – this grade | 99.9%, water max 0.10%, carbonyl max 0.01%, sulfide max 1 ppm | Water-sensitive reactions, catalyst-sensitive systems, electronics residue and odor thresholds |
| Pharmaceutical (USP/EP) | Compendial monograph limits | Documentation and compendial identity, for licensed manufacture |
| Electronic | Very low metals, particles and non-volatile residue | Surface contamination in wafer and PCB cleaning |
Properties and handling
| Property | Value | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Formula / molecular weight | C3H8O / 60.10 | Small, polar molecule – it penetrates and evaporates quickly |
| Miscibility with water | Complete | Used as a coupling solvent and as a drying agent for wet surfaces |
| Water azeotrope | About 87.7% IPA with water, boiling near 80 deg C | Why a 0.10% water limit requires azeotropic distillation or molecular sieve drying rather than simple distillation |
| Flash point | About 12 deg C | Flammable liquid – storage, bonding and earthing requirements apply |
| Evaporation rate | Fast | Good for cleaning and drying; causes chill and rapid concentration changes in open vessels |
Applications
| Sector | Function |
|---|---|
| Coatings and inks | Solvent for resins, and a tail solvent that controls drying and flow |
| Electronics | Cleaning and drying of assemblies and surfaces where residue is unacceptable |
| Pharmaceutical | Extraction, crystallisation and processing solvent; cleaning agent |
| Chemical synthesis | Solvent and intermediate, notably for acetone and isopropylamines |
| Personal care | Solvent and carrier in fragrance, hand gels and hair products |
| General industrial | Degreasing, surface preparation, laboratory solvent |
Packaging, storage and documentation
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Packaging | 160 kg drums, IBC and bulk road tanker |
| Storage | Cool, dry, well ventilated, away from ignition sources and oxidisers. Keep containers closed – IPA absorbs atmospheric moisture and will drift out of the 0.10% water specification in a humid store |
| Transport | Flammable liquid; classification and packing per the applicable transport regulations |
| Documentation | Batch COA (purity, water, acidity, residue, carbonyl, sulfide, colour) plus SDS |
