Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K90), CAS: 9003-39-8

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K90), CAS 9003-39-8, is a water-soluble, film-forming vinyl polymer supplied here in technical grade. The K90 grade is a high-molecular-weight type (K-value 87.4-94.2) used where a strong binder, film former or thickener is needed – in adhesives, coatings, electronics, ceramics, detergents and personal care. PolyBlueChem supplies PVP K90 (technical grade) to the specification below with per-batch COA and SDS.

Specifications (Technical Grade)

Parameter Specification
Appearance White or yellowish-white hygroscopic powder
Identification A, B, C, D
pH 4.0 – 9.0
Appearance of solution Clear solution
K-Value 87.4 – 94.2 (nominal K90)
Vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) residual monomer 0.1% max
Water 5.0% max
Residue on ignition 0.1% max
Nitrogen content 11.5 – 12.8%

The K-value characterises molecular weight (and therefore viscosity and binding strength) – higher K means higher molecular weight; K90 is a high-viscosity grade. The NVP limit (0.1% max) controls residual monomer, and the nitrogen content range confirms the polymer composition. A full specification sheet and a certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch are available on request.

Applications

  • Adhesives and binders – film-forming binder in glues, remoistenable and hot-melt adhesives, and as a viscosity builder.
  • Coatings and inks – pigment dispersion, film former and rheology modifier in water-based systems.
  • Electronics – binder and dispersant in photoresists, conductive pastes and capacitor/electrode formulations.
  • Ceramics and refractory – green binder that burns out cleanly before sintering.
  • Detergents and cleaning – dye-transfer inhibitor, thickener and soil-release aid.
  • Personal care – film former and fixative in hair and styling products.
  • Textile and paper – sizing, coating and finishing aid.

Packaging and documentation

  • 25 kg PP/PE bags or fibre drums; sealed, cool, dry storage (the powder is hygroscopic).
  • Per-batch certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS).
  • Store sealed and dry away from moisture and heat; the powder absorbs water from the air.
