Sodium Bicarbonate (Food Grade), CAS: 144-55-8

Sodium bicarbonate, CAS 144-55-8 (NaHCO3), is a white, mildly alkaline crystalline powder used as a food-grade leavening agent and acidity regulator (E500), a rumen buffer in animal feed, a dry sorbent for flue-gas acid removal, and a pH/alkalinity adjuster in water treatment and cleaning. PolyBlueChem supplies food-grade sodium bicarbonate to the specification below, with per-batch COA and SDS and competitive pricing on bulk volumes.

Specifications (Food Grade)

Parameter Specification
Content (as NaHCO3) 99% min
Chloride (Cl) 0.4% max
Arsenic 0.0001% max
Heavy metals (as Pb) 0.0005% max
Loss on drying 0.20% max
pH value 8.5 max
Ammonium salt (NH4) Pass
Clarity Pass
Whiteness 85 min

The tight arsenic and heavy-metal limits (0.0001% and 0.0005% max) are what make this a food-grade material; the whiteness and clarity tests cover the appearance expected in food and feed use. A full specification sheet and a certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch are available on request.

Basic Information

Synonyms Sodium bicarbonate; sodium hydrogen carbonate; bicarbonate of soda; baking soda
Molecular formula NaHCO3
Molecular weight 84.007 g/mol
Appearance White crystalline powder
Grade Food grade
Food additive number E500 (sodium carbonates)

Applications

  • Food and beverage – leavening agent in baking (releases CO2 on heating or with acid); acidity regulator and leavening base (E500); effervescent and beverage applications.
  • Animal feed – rumen buffer in dairy and beef cattle feed to help stabilise rumen pH.
  • Flue-gas treatment – dry sorbent injection to neutralise acid gases (SO2, HCl, HF) in flue-gas cleaning.
  • Water treatment – pH and alkalinity adjustment, and as a mild alkaline source in process water.
  • Chemical and pharmaceutical – mild base and buffering agent; effervescent and tablet formulations.
  • Cleaning and personal care – mild abrasive and deodoriser in cleaning products; bath and effervescent personal-care products.

Packaging and documentation

  • 25 kg PP/PE bags and 1000 kg jumbo bags; palletised for container shipment.
  • Per-batch certificate of analysis (COA) and safety data sheet (SDS).
  • Store sealed and dry. Sodium bicarbonate decomposes slowly on heating (above about 50 °C) and releases CO2; keep away from acids (acid contact releases CO2 rapidly).
