SIBX and Xanthate Supply to African Mines

SIBX and Xanthate Supply to African Mines

Africa is one of the world’s great sulphide-flotation regions – the Central African Copperbelt, the West African gold belts, southern African PGM and base-metal operations – and xanthate collectors are consumed in huge volumes across the continent. This page covers how we supply SIBX and other xanthates to African mines: the packaging, the ports, the documents and the one factor that is unique to xanthates – they degrade.

1. Where xanthates are used in Africa

Region Typical operations Collector use
Central Africa (Zambia, DRC) Copper-cobalt sulphide and oxide operations SIBX/SIPX for copper sulphide flotation
West Africa (Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cte d’Ivoire) Gold mines Collectors for gold-bearing sulphide flotation
East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya) Gold and base-metal Collectors and reagent suites
Southern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana) PGM, copper, nickel, gold Collectors, depressants and modifiers

2. Why xanthates need different logistics

Xanthates are not shelf-stable like a rock salt. They decompose with moisture, heat and time (releasing carbon disulphide), so the way they are supplied and stored matters as much as the grade:

  • Buy to consumption. Plan deliveries against your monthly consumption so the stock is used well within its shelf life.
  • Keep it dry and cool. Store in sealed containers, out of direct sun and away from acids and oxidisers.
  • Rotate stock. First in, first out; do not accumulate a year’s supply in a hot warehouse.
  • Make up solutions fresh. Prepare only the solution you will use in the shift.

This is why we usually recommend regular, scheduled deliveries rather than one bulk shipment – it protects both the reagent and the circuit.

3. Packaging

Packaging Notes
PP/PE woven bags (e.g. 25 kg) with inner liner Common export packing for xanthates; the liner keeps moisture out
Drums (steel or fibre) Used where a sturdier, more moisture-proof pack is wanted
Jumbo bags For plants with bulk handling and high consumption

Tell us how your plant unloads and stores reagents; the packaging is then matched to that, with moisture protection as the priority.

4. Ports and delivery

We quote FOB or CIF to the ports your mine actually uses, including:

Region Example ports
Southern Africa Durban, Cape Town, Walvis Bay, Beira, Maputo
East Africa Mombasa, Dar es Salaam
West Africa Tema, Takoradi, Lagos/Apapa, Abidjan, Cotonou
Inland routes Onward haulage to the Copperbelt and inland gold mines is arranged with your freight forwarder

For the Copperbelt, cargo often lands at Durban, Dar es Salaam or Walvis Bay and moves inland; tell us the final site and we will quote a route that matches.

5. Documents and quality

  • Per-batch COA – activity (assay) and free alkali, the two parameters that matter most for xanthates.
  • SDS – for handling, storage and transport classification.
  • Certificate of origin where required.
  • Third-party inspection (SGS/BV) on request.

6. Planning the supply

Lever What it does
Scheduled monthly / quarterly deliveries Keeps stock fresh; avoids degradation losses
Annual volume quotation Better pricing and supply stability
Two qualified suppliers Protects the circuit if one plant is short
On-site safety stock Prevents a stock-out stopping the flotation circuit

Because a concentrator cannot run without collector, the supply plan matters as much as the price. We quote by tonnage and support scheduled deliveries through the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply xanthates to African mines?

Yes – SIBX, SIPX, PAX and SEX, FOB or CIF to Durban, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Walvis Bay, Tema, Lagos and other ports, with onward routes to inland mines.

How should xanthates be stored at a mine?

Sealed, cool and dry, away from acids and oxidisers – and used within the shelf life. Buy to consumption and rotate stock (FIFO).

What packaging is used?

PP/PE bags with a moisture-barrier liner, drums, or jumbo bags – matched to how your plant unloads and stores reagents.

What documents come with a xanthate shipment?

A per-batch COA (activity and free alkali), SDS, certificate of origin where required, and third-party inspection on request.
