Sulfamic Acid in Nickel Plating and Metal Finishing
Sulfamic acid (CAS 5329-14-6) is not only a descaler – it is the acid behind nickel sulfamate plating, the electrolyte used to deposit low-stress, thick nickel layers. That makes it a genuine electroplating chemical, and it is also used across metal finishing for chloride-free pickling and equipment cleaning. This page covers those uses.
1. Sulfamic acid in the plating bath
Nickel sulfamate plating solutions are made by dissolving nickel carbonate or nickel hydroxide in sulfamic acid, giving nickel sulfamate in solution, together with boric acid as a buffer and small amounts of chloride and organic additives.
| Property | Why nickel sulfamate is chosen |
|---|---|
| Low internal stress | The deposit is far less stressed than a Watts (sulfate/chloride) nickel – critical for thick and electroformed parts |
| High deposition rate | Deposits quickly, often at high current density |
| Thick, ductile deposits | Suits heavy build-up, electroforming and repair work |
| Chloride-free chemistry | Avoids the chloride that stresses deposits and attacks some equipment |
2. Where nickel sulfamate plating is used
- Electroforming – making moulds, tools and precision parts by deposition onto a mandrel.
- Aerospace and defence – build-up and repair of high-value components.
- Moulds and dies – nickel shells and cavity build-up.
- Connectors and electronics – functional coatings where ductility and low stress matter.
- Restoration of worn parts – restoring dimensions with a dense, stressed-free deposit.
3. Typical bath chemistry (illustrative)
| Component | Typical role / range |
|---|---|
| Nickel sulfamate | Nickel source (prepared from nickel carbonate or hydroxide + sulfamic acid) |
| Boric acid | Buffer to hold the pH in range |
| Nickel chloride | Small addition for anode corrosion (kept low) |
| Wetting agent / additives | Reduce pitting; control stress and brightness |
| pH | Typically about 3.5 – 4.5 |
| Temperature | Typically about 40 – 60 deg C |
These are illustrative ranges – the exact bath is set by the plating process and the deposit specification. Sulfamic acid is bought as the acid or used to make up the sulfamate from nickel carbonate/hydroxide on site.
4. Chloride-free pickling and equipment cleaning
Beyond the bath, sulfamic acid is used in metal finishing for:
- Pickling and rust removal – a solid, chloride-free alternative to hydrochloric acid (see the comparison).
- Descaling plating lines and heat exchangers – removing carbonate and hydroxide scale without introducing chlorides.
- Cleaning anodes, tanks and racks – routine maintenance chemistry.
Because it brings no chloride, sulfamic acid is the safer choice around stainless steel, nickel and other alloys used in plating and finishing equipment.
5. Handling and safety
- Do not mix with nitrites. Sulfamic acid reacts with nitrites to release nitrogen gas and heat – keep them strictly separate.
- PPE and ventilation. It is acidic and irritant; use goggles, gloves and good ventilation.
- Storage. Keep dry and sealed, away from alkalis, nitrites and strong oxidisers.
- Bath control. In plating, control the sulfamate concentration, pH, temperature and additives to the process specification.
6. Grades, packaging and supply
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Purity | Technical grade, typically 99.5% min; other grades on request |
| Packaging | 25 kg PP/PE bags; 1000 kg jumbo bags; full container loads |
| Documents | Per-batch COA and SDS; third-party inspection on request |
| Delivery | FOB or CIF to your port |
For plating work, confirm the purity and impurity limits your bath needs – trace impurities matter more in an electrolyte than in a descaling job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sulfamic acid used in electroplating?
Yes – it is the acid behind nickel sulfamate plating, used for low-stress, thick and ductile nickel deposits (electroforming, moulds, aerospace, connectors).
Why use nickel sulfamate instead of Watts nickel?
Because nickel sulfamate deposits are much lower in internal stress and can be built up thicker and faster – critical for electroforming and heavy build-up.
What purity of sulfamic acid is used in plating?
Technical grade (typically 99.5% min) is common; the required purity depends on the bath and the deposit specification, so confirm the limits with your supplier.
Can sulfamic acid be used for pickling before plating?
Yes – as a chloride-free pickle and descaler, which avoids the chloride-related pitting and stress problems associated with hydrochloric acid.
