TMTD in Latex, Adhesives and Low-Temperature Vulcanisation
TMTD (tetramethylthiuram disulfide, CAS 137-26-8) is not only a dry-rubber accelerator. Its very fast action and its ability to work at low temperature make it valuable in latex compounds, adhesives and room-temperature curing systems – applications where a conventional high-temperature cure is not available. This guide covers where TMTD is used in those systems and how it is applied.
1. Why TMTD suits latex and low-temperature cure
- Very fast. As a thiuram, TMTD cures quickly, which matters when the cure temperature is limited.
- Low-temperature activity. With a dithiocarbamate co-accelerator it will cure at or near room temperature.
- In aqueous systems. Dispersed or dissolved TMTD works in latex, where it cooperates with zinc oxide.
- Sulfur donor. In a latex or low-sulfur system it can also supply crosslinking sulfur.
2. Latex compounds
In latex the cure system is usually TMTD or a dithiocarbamate with zinc oxide and sulfur (or a sulfur donor). Typical latex goods:
| Product | Role of the TMTD system |
|---|---|
| Dipped gloves and balloons | Fast, controllable cure in a thin film |
| Latex foam and sponge | Cure that matches the foaming and gelling stages |
| Threads and elastic goods | Continuous, fast cure |
| Adhesives and binders | Vulcanising a latex binder in situ |
| Parameter | Typical practice |
|---|---|
| TMTD level in latex | About 0.5 – 2 phr (on solids), with ZnO and sulfur/donor |
| Co-accelerator | A dithiocarbamate (for example ZDEC) for very fast / low-temperature cure |
| pH | Alkaline latex systems; keep the pH stable for a consistent cure |
3. Low-temperature and room-temperature cure
Where a compound cannot be heated – field repairs, some adhesives, certain moulded goods – the cure system has to be active at ambient or slightly elevated temperature. TMTD with a dithiocarbamate is one of the classic combinations for this.
| System | Typical cure temperature | Note |
|---|---|---|
| TMTD + dithiocarbamate (ultra) | Ambient to slightly elevated | Very fast; pot life must be managed |
| TMTD + thiazole | Elevated (for example 100-150 deg C) | Fast but more controllable |
| TMTD + sulfenamide | Elevated | Delay then fast; better processing safety |
Because these systems cure quickly, the compound’s pot life (scorch) is short – mix in small batches and use promptly, or control the temperature to extend the working time.
4. Adhesives and rubber-to-substrate bonding
- Latex-based adhesives – TMTD vulcanises the rubber phase of the adhesive to develop strength and heat resistance.
- Rubber-to-metal bonding – cure systems containing TMTD are used in bonding compounds and in some adhesive formulations.
- Self-vulcanising adhesives – systems that cure at room temperature after application.
5. Dosage (starting points)
| Use | Typical dosage |
|---|---|
| Latex compound | About 0.5 – 2 phr on solids |
| Ultra / low-temperature system | About 0.5 – 1.5 phr with a dithiocarbamate |
| Sulfur donor in a latex EV system | About 1 – 2 phr |
All doses are system-specific and must be confirmed by cure testing on the actual latex or adhesive.
6. Handling, safety and regulation
- Sensitizer. TMTD is a skin (and respiratory) sensitizer – handle as a dust-controlled dispersion or powder with PPE.
- Harmful if swallowed or on skin; eye irritant; very toxic to aquatic life. Prevent release to drains and watercourses.
- Alcohol reaction. TMTD can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol – warn workers.
- Regulatory. As an industrial rubber chemical TMTD is widely used; as a plant-protection product (thiram) it is restricted in some regions. Confirm the requirements for your market.
7. Buying TMTD for latex and adhesive use
- Confirm the form: powder for dispersion, or granules for dry handling.
- Ask for the per-batch COA (melting point, loss on heating, ash, sieve residue).
- Confirm dispersibility if you prepare aqueous dispersions.
- State the application (latex / adhesive / dry rubber) on the enquiry so the right documentation is supplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can TMTD be used in latex?
Yes – it is a common accelerator in latex compounds, usually with zinc oxide and sulfur or a sulfur donor, and often with a dithiocarbamate for a faster cure.
Can TMTD cure rubber at room temperature?
With a dithiocarbamate co-accelerator it forms a very fast, low-temperature cure system. Pot life is short, so mix and use accordingly.
Is TMTD used in adhesives?
Yes – in latex-based and self-vulcanising adhesives, where it vulcanises the rubber phase and develops strength and heat resistance.
How much TMTD is used in latex?
About 0.5-2 phr on solids as a starting point, confirmed by cure testing on the actual latex.
