These three names appear together so often that buyers assume they are alternatives. They are not: 2-methylfuran is the raw material, 2-MeTHF is what it becomes, and THF is what 2-MeTHF increasingly replaces. Confusing the roles leads to two opposite mistakes – buying a precursor as if it were a solvent, or paying for a bio-based solvent when a precursor was what the process needed.
1. The three, side by side
| Property | 2-Methylfuran | 2-MeTHF | THF |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAS | 534-22-5 | 96-47-9 | 109-99-9 |
| Formula / MW | C5H6O / 82.10 | C5H10O / 86.13 | C4H8O / 72.11 |
| Ring | Furan (aromatic, unsaturated) | Tetrahydrofuran (saturated) | Tetrahydrofuran (saturated) |
| Boiling point | 63-64 °C | About 80 °C | About 66 °C |
| Flash point | About -22 °C | About -11 °C | About -14 °C |
| Water solubility | Low (a few g/L) | About 14 g/100 mL | Fully miscible |
| Role | Precursor / intermediate | Solvent | Solvent |
| Origin | Bio-based (from furfural) | Bio-based (hydrogenation of 2-methylfuran) | Petrochemical |
Read the “role” row carefully. 2-Methylfuran is bought to be converted. 2-MeTHF and THF are bought to be used and recovered. Almost every sourcing error in this group comes from treating the first as if it belonged with the other two.
2. Why 2-MeTHF displaces THF
| Issue with THF | How 2-MeTHF answers it |
|---|---|
| Fully miscible with water, so recovery from an aqueous work-up requires distillation of a large water load | Only about 14 g/100 mL soluble, so the organic phase separates and can be decanted – often the single largest energy saving in a process |
| Petrochemical origin, which is a problem for bio-content claims | Made from furfural, a biomass platform molecule; the bio-content is traceable to agricultural residue |
| Boiling point 66 °C, so losses during filtration and transfer are significant | Boiling point about 80 °C, giving a wider operating window and lower evaporative loss |
| Forms peroxides on storage | Also forms peroxides, but at a lower tendency – the storage precautions are the same, not none |
The last row is where expectations should be calibrated. 2-MeTHF is not a solvent that can be left in a half-empty bottle on a shelf for a year; it is a solvent that is somewhat more forgiving and considerably easier to recover.
3. When 2-methylfuran itself is used as a solvent
Rarely, and for specific reasons. Its very low flash point rules it out of most open handling, and its reactivity means it can participate in the reaction rather than just hosting it. The legitimate cases are narrow:
- As a reactant, in hydrogenation, Diels-Alder chemistry or furan functionalisation – which is the normal case.
- As a volatile solvent where rapid and complete removal is essential and the substrate is inert to furan chemistry.
- As a model or reference compound in analytical and mechanistic work.
4. Choosing between them
| Your requirement | Answer |
|---|---|
| You need a bio-based ether solvent to replace THF | 2-MeTHF – not 2-methylfuran |
| You are making 2-MeTHF | 2-Methylfuran as the feed, at 0.05% max water |
| You need a furan building block with a methyl handle | 2-Methylfuran |
| You want phase separation in an aqueous work-up | 2-MeTHF; THF will not do it |
| You need the highest possible solvency for a polar organometallic | THF still has the strongest track record, and 2-MeTHF is the usual substitute |
| You have an existing THF process and want a drop-in change | Test 2-MeTHF on the specific reaction; boiling point, phase behaviour and peroxide behaviour all shift |
5. Four mistakes worth avoiding
- Quoting 2-methylfuran as a solvent. The price per kilogram looks attractive next to 2-MeTHF until you account for the flash point, the drum pressure and the reactivity.
- Assuming THF and 2-MeTHF are interchangeable without testing. The boiling point difference is 14 °C and the water miscibility difference is total; both change a process.
- Treating “bio-based” as “no special handling”. 2-MeTHF is still a flammable ether that forms peroxides.
- Buying 2-methylfuran on assay alone. The moisture limit is the specification that decides whether the downstream hydrogenation works.
6. What to put on the purchase order
- The CAS – 534-22-5, 96-47-9 and 109-99-9 are three different products with three different roles.
- For 2-methylfuran: assay 99% min and moisture 0.05% max, plus nitrogen padding.
- For 2-MeTHF: water content and peroxide value, since both drive the storage life.
- For THF: peroxide inhibitor status and water content.
- Pack size against consumption for all three – they are all volatile and all age.
7. Packaging and supply
All three are flammable ethers or furans supplied in steel drums (typically 160-180 kg) and in smaller sealed containers; nitrogen padding is available for 2-methylfuran and is standard practice for any long storage. Each lot ships with a COA and SDS, FOB or CIF against destination, with flammable-liquid classification on the transport documents. Store cool, dark, away from acids and oxidisers, and buy to consumption.
