Accelerator TBBS (NS) in Rubber Vulcanization

Accelerator TBBS (NS) in Rubber Vulcanization

Accelerator TBBS (NS, CAS 95-31-8) is a sulfenamide delayed-action accelerator for sulfur vulcanization, and the most widely used accelerator in tyres. This page explains what it does, where it is used and how it is chosen.

What it does in the cure system

Stage What happens
Mixing / processing TBBS is stable at processing temperature – no premature cure (scorch safety)
Heating to cure temperature The sulfur-nitrogen bond breaks, releasing the thiazole accelerator and an amine activator
Cure With zinc oxide/stearic acid and sulfur, crosslinks form quickly and uniformly

The delayed action is the key benefit: large tyre components can be mixed, built and stored, then cured reliably in the press.

Why TBBS dominates tyres

Reason Benefit
High scorch safety Safe processing of large, slow-building components
Fast, efficient cure Productivity and good physical properties
Clean cure Works in light-coloured compounds
Primary-amine derived Lower nitrosamine concern

What TBBS needs to work

  • Sulfur – the crosslinker, at conventional, semi-EV or EV level.
  • Activators – zinc oxide and stearic acid.
  • Optional co-accelerator or retarder – such as a thiuram, DPG or PVI, to tune cure and scorch.

TBBS vs the other sulfenamides

Accelerator Delay Best for
CZ (CBS) Medium General tyres and technical goods
TBBS (NS) Medium-high Tyres; the most common sulfenamide
DCBS High Thick sections, longest scorch safety

TBBS sits towards the safer end of the common range; when even more scorch safety is needed (very thick parts), DCBS is used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TBBS the same as NS?

Yes – TBBS, NS and NZ are names for N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide (CAS 95-31-8).

Why is TBBS so widely used in tyres?

It gives an excellent balance of scorch safety and fast, efficient cure, ideal for large tyre components.

Does TBBS need sulfur and activators?

Yes – it works in a sulfur cure system with zinc oxide and stearic acid.

Is TBBS a skin sensitiser?

Yes – like most accelerators it is a potential skin sensitiser; avoid skin contact.

When should I use DCBS instead?

When you need even longer scorch safety – for example in very thick, slow-heating parts.
